since we last spoke

I turned 30.

How different do I look from when I was 29? A bit no?

some catch up from Toronto

June 29, 2009 at 3:09 am (work) (, , )

New York and Toronto were a thrill. More wet than dry, and certainly muggy. It was the first time I had been back East with no severe weather. Other visits were done in either the dead of winter seeing Ashkan while he went to grad school there, or in mid-August when the humidity of NYC would kick up the filthy smell of the streets.

I went to Toronto next to visit our company headquarters. And laugh my ass off with my friend Monika. She’s a systems gal in our office, but I would never define her many amazing qualities and box her in that job description.

Good times in NYC

June 22, 2009 at 4:42 pm (nostalgia, weekends, work) (, , , , )

I just got to Toronto for a week of work internal meetings. But I had a hoot at New York doing an event for work, then lingering in Brooklyn and the Lower East side chilling with some friends.

the wild ass

June 13, 2009 at 7:20 pm (nostalgia, weekends) (, )

A while back I hung out with Fischer, Marie, Melissa and Levon. It was a follow up on an evening we had not too long ago.

The kind where we partake in curious activities then watch a really cheesy 80s movie. This round we watched Heathers. Then half a bag of courderoy potato chips (Ruffles – Friendinator TM) and two glazed donuts later, we decided to watch Planet Earth on BluRay on Mike’s ginormous LED in his bedroom.
One part nap orgy, one part “curious activities”, two parts hi-def nature show and you get yourself a cocktail of ridiculous retardation with too many cameras and too many hilarious people in one place.

I give you, the aftermath:

Colombia muchachas

May 27, 2009 at 3:40 am (culture, video) (, , , )

I’ve had an insane past month. Two large international trip back to back = not the wisest idea. But one was for work, and one was for a wedding of a fantastically good pair of friends. What can I say? I’m a glutton for airport punishment and passport stampage.

I’m going to post shortly with more detailed videos and such, but for now relish in the two I’ve achieved in the past few days just compiling some HD video footage I took with my new Canon Powershot SD780IS camera.

Day 3 at FMX

May 7, 2009 at 12:28 pm (culture, Europe, nerd, work)

So I’m writing from the FMX T-Mobile lounge place. Basically, it’s a pimped out place to surf the net free. Man, why don’t we just free web ALL THE TIME. It ought to be like water…wait, we pay for that.

at FMX

Last night I had an invite to the infamous FMX Speakers dinner and it was pretty neato. I feel so stinkin’ handicapped with no iPhone GPS and a zillion places named “Strasse” in Stuttgart. It took 4 reasonably intelligent adults to find the restaurant roughly 5 blocks away … 30 minutes. And one of us was 6’6″ … no excuse. Richard, you ought to be able to see above the clouds and navigate.

Anyhow, I’ve been doing some live recording of our presentations and posting them to the site. Here is a link to the work blog if you care to see some nerd vidz.

Stuttgart, Day 2

May 3, 2009 at 2:18 pm (Europe, nerd, video, weekends) (, , )

So, this is what I look like after a two hour nap. You know, the one that’s supposed to be only 30 minutes so that you can eventually get used to the time change.

Yeahhhh, that didn’t happen. Now I’m up and need a shower and will be grossly excited to see Janet and Jeff as they’re coming in from London as I type.
Yay, I get to hang with people (exlamation mark). Sorry, I have no exclamation function on my keyboard. I just learned this yesterday. Thanks Apple.

Anyhow, here’s something far more interesting, my little video I made from my long bike ride this morning. Sunday is DEAD in Germany in terms of anything to do except be forced to hang with family. However, this is a cool thing because the city becomes soooo quiet. I’ve made an edit of my pics and mini-vids and added exciting music to make it all seem way cooler for your eyes. Actually, I’ve been somewhat addicted to the track I used on this.

Enjoy <exclamation mark>

5. German’s make and sell the worlds most leading fashionable orthopedic shoes. I swear that’s all I see on the streets. What’s with that? Are they all hurting from walking? My mom would love this place.

PS: The hair may be terrible, but I got some awesome hipster chick bruises somehow from today’s bike ride. sweet.

ich bin back

May 3, 2009 at 1:26 am (culture, Europe, tech)

I’m back in Stuttgart, Germany for the FMX Conference this year. And having been able to come once, go home, then come back again … I’ve found a whole new slew of patterns and interesting things about Germany and Europe.

Here’s a small list, and I’ve been here for only 5 hours

  1. taking Swiss Air to go anywhere is much like a journey to Rivendell. Only, there’s really suprisingly  with no leg room.
  2. All serious Germans must wear the tiniest modern glasses barely covering their pupils. This includes children.
  3. If you live in Europe, your mobile phone number consists of 22 digits , roughly (WTF???).
  4. Germans actually sweat chocolate, true fact.

Oh man, I’m so friggin’ jet lag. I really need to get to bed again as it’s 3am my time.. It’s gonna be a long week, so I gotta spare the energy tonight.

oh look, Leicas I found while strolling around the Schloss… 🙂

Design Douche

April 28, 2009 at 5:07 pm (nerd, tech, video)

John Courte and I found this video on Gizmodo the other day, while I was trying to find some wireless speakers for my home. I want to remotely pipe music into my living room through my laptop iTunes, and use my iPhone remote to control the playlist.

While searching for the perfect cheap and decent speakers, we found this video.

John: “What a design douche. That scarf makes him terrible.”

Leyla: “I don’t even get it. How am I supposed to turn down the music when the pizza guy comes without looking like an asshole?”

I’m leaving for Germany next Friday. This kicks off a long month (actually 4 months) of consistent travel.

I find it fitting that last night I watched Religulous, which I found quite funny, but it ended wit this fantastic Talking Heads song.
